PRESIDENT’S CUP 2010
Sunday the 24th of January saw the 20th
running of the DMC Saffron Walden & District Snooker League
President’s Cup sponsored by Bullet Brickwork UK Ltd,. 40
players from as far a field as Sawston through to Harlow came to
take part and the event was held at Saffron Snooker Club.
The President’s Cup is a handicap singles
tournament and the maximum difference is limited to 85 points
head start per frame.
The first round of the tournament shaped
the way the day would go, with most of the league’s top names
going out, defending champion Dave Taylor crashed out, along
with team mates Neil Waterman, Darren Edmonston and Danny Mooney
who had all come from the Harlow War Memorial Club. Mooney
played Adam Ingram, who knocked in break of 107 during there
match.
Ingram was at it again in the second round,
playing his team mate Steve Wright he had another century break,
this time a 110 to see him through, and this proved to be the
highest break of the day.
The players who had lost there first match
of the day all had the chance to go into the Plate tournament,
and this was now underway, adding to the atmosphere which was
starting to build inside the club.
By the time both tournaments has reached
the semi final stage, the main tournament was looking like it
could be a family affair, with the Spackman brothers, Rob and
Mike still in and in opposite sides of the draw. Mike beat Nigel
Ginn of the Bishops Stortford Tornados to book his place in the
final, but Rob couldn't repeat his brother’s form, going down
2-1 to Roger Loveday from the Sawston Jets.
In the final of the Plate tournament, Jeff
Langmaid of the Snooker Club Spiders was taking on Sam Moralee
of the Snooker Club Greens, and in a fast flowing match it was
Jeff who took the victory with a great shot on the last red to
ease him to the trophy
The final of the main event had the makings
of a great match, and that's what the supporters of both players
got. Mike was giving Roger 44 points head start per frame, and
both players kept their form of the earlier rounds going into
the final, the match became even more finely poised as the frame
score went 1-1 and the match went to the deciding frame, in what
turned into a superb frame of snooker, with a twist at the end
even Sherlock Holmes wouldn't have seen coming, Mike having
caught up the handicap and moved 17 points in front with only 22
left on the table, he looked to have the match won, but having
been on the defensive for most of the frame, Roger calmly potted
the brown, blue and pink to make it a black ball frame and
match. Mike had the first chance to pot it, going for a risky
long shot down the rail, which looked to be heading in, but the
black hit the jaws of the pocket and headed across the table
coming to rest a few inches from the opposite side pocket, Roger
held his nerve and potted it for the match.
Congratulations Roger and Jeff
